Vanha paikka, uusi alku. Old Place, New Beginning.
Tilalle tuli ajatus omasta kodista, lainarahalla ostetusta tietenkin.

It’s been quite a few years since some kind of idea bit deep into me and stuck with me, and I started dreaming of getting a small place to fix up.
I mentioned the idea to my parents, and in the end it actually came from my father: what if I worked on his childhood home. This house, clad in mineralite boards, stood just across the road from my own childhood home. There it was, and that’s basically where it all started.
The project began in 2014.
Friends, relatives, acquaintances and even the occasional “enemies” followed my projects through my blog and Instagram whenever I had the energy to write or share photos. At best, a post might have had around 47 readers, but that was never really the point.
Then came 2017. My father and my grandmother passed away within a short period of time, and a lot of things changed along with that. The cabin stayed in my mind for a while, but gradually it held on less and less.
Then came winter. The final blow. A water pipe froze, something that could have been prevented if I had been in a different place, in a different state of mind.
After that, the cabin was pushed to the background.
Instead, I started thinking about getting my own home, financed with a loan of course. A terraced house end apartment was found in Lavia in 2018, and it felt like exactly the right decision at the time.
But some places never really leave your mind.
The idea of returning to my childhood surroundings and bringing the place back into a more lived-in, welcoming and functional condition started to resurface last year. And this time it didn’t stay just an idea. At the beginning of 2026, it became reality when I unexpectedly got a familiar person as a tenant for my terraced end apartment.
Now I’ve spent a few months living again in a familiar yard and surroundings. Steps that feel both new and old at the same time, yet still refreshing.
In my writing, I’ll be using the term retro home for this place. In future entries, I’ll start exploring where that sense of “retro” actually comes from.
